Twilight Times:  Evening Activities at Camp

Your gift will provide the entertainers, decorations, refreshments, and prizes for one of a variety of evening activities at SFAH.  To support an evening activity for one camp session, the cost is $150.  Our famous evening activities program includes:

Steal the Bacon

Camp Spirit in Spades! Teams of campers face off against each other in two lines across the court. Each camper has a secret number and it’s the first camper to the middle base who collects the points for their team.

Campfire

S’mores, Songs, Stars, - campfires are the traditional camp experience.

This is the perfect way to make new friends and memories for a lifetime.

Dances

Mix and mingle, everyone loves the dances highlighted with decorations, candy, soda and even a chocolate fountain, yum! Dance party themes have included bad hair day, toga, cowboy, 70's and movie star. We'd love to hear your ideas!

Brain Freeze

Boys vs. girls -the whole camp is split between the two teams for brain teaser quizzes. There are questions for all ages so that everyone has a say..

Lots of prizes to win; breakfast in bed,  trips to town, late wake up.

A great night when the campers hope they don’t have brain freeze!

Hypno Joe

Everyone looks forward to a visit from our local celebrity camp hypnotist who uses his hypnotic powers on campers and staff. During the course of the evening he challenges the campers to resist his mind bending powers.

Pajama Party

Everyone gets ready for an early night and evening of fun in PJ’s! Then it's bunk vs. bunk and lots of silly games and laughter galore.

SFAH Book of Records

Who will be the SFAH Record Holder? Since 2000 we have kept a records’ journal. Activities such as holding arms out to the side, candy on the tongue,

basketball bounce; have an historical record in our book. Every year campers challenge old records in hopes of breaking them and be named #1 in the SFAH Book of Records.

SFAH Idol

A panel of naughty and nice judges give their opinion and score our camper performances. The camper that is judged “the best” is the one true SFAH Idol.

Fright Night

An evening of scary stories and Halloween tricks begins and then the bravest of the brave take a walk through the darkest stretches of SFAH grounds. On this night of nights, they never know what  will jump out from around the next corner.

Prom

As a wonderful crescendo to the summer and at the end of each session, the camp is transformed into a dreamy wonderland where the campers and staff, dressed in their finest, share an evening of dancing and edible delights. It’s a formal affair and the campers delight in the magic of the evening.

Wish Boats

On the last afternoon of each session the campers make their wish boat; a simple boat with a small candle in it that the campers take down to the pool.

As the boats are set adrift, the campers share their favorite camp memory. At the end of the evening, there is a camper’s “wish” (the boat with the last candle alight) that is granted.

Sports and Games

For $250.00 you can support the costs of one of our many adapted sports and games programs, for a three-week camp session.

Basketball

Who doesn’t like a little round ball on a summer afternoon or evening? The Older Boys are big fans. Everyone makes their way to our adaptive court for a little swish and dunk.

Gladiators

A real camper favorite! Wrapped in protective equipment and avoiding the fury of the tennis ball machine, the campers complete a course while maneuvering from base to base.

Tennis

Tennis anyone? A big favorite with the most limited of campers, tennis with adaptive equipment expands participation and learned skills.

Archery

A great challenge and experience, adaptive table mounted archery lets all of campers aim and fire an arrow. Many think they won’t be able to do but really enjoy holding the bow and letting the air zing on target..

Dodge Ball

Who can resist - A court full of balls and protective bases, two teams, one prize

The traditional camp favorite in an adaptive environment becomes

a game all the campers love.  A big favorite with the younger campers.

Yoga

A yoga instructor works with the campers to help them with the movement

and flow of yoga. Campers learn to stretch, breathe and enjoy the tranquil spirit. An activity that even campers with limited range of movement can enjoy. A big favorite with the older girls bunk.

Bunk Raids

A silly, fun, activity that the campers love and plan for days. Leave your bunk and beware there’s always a chance of a bunk raid! Many times the older boys will return to find their bunk has been ‘redecorated'.

Beach Trips

Summer at the beach is everyone’s summer delight. Our campers adore the beach-daytime in the sun or evenings nestled around fire pits and listening to the waves and jungle drums!  For those cold winter nights, these are the hot memories of camp SFAH.

Daytime Outings

$10.00 buys admission tickets, transportation, snacks, etc. for each child attending these favorite, off-camp activities.

Movies

SFAH loves the movies! For campers without guests on visitor’s day, or on a rainy day, going to the movies with their friends is a special treat.

Cole Brothers Circus

The campers love the circus with acrobats spinning , motorbikes balancing on tightropes, and people flying through the air with the greatest of ease. Add cotton candy and circus treats- this is an afternoon to remember!

Aquarium

The bunks go as a group to the aquarium in Riverhead and enjoy the marine shows, especially the shark tank! A unique experience that brings big smiles back to camp.

Concerts in the Park

Uumpahh, uumpahh, soft summer evenings on a blanket in the Park listening to fine old jazz or the greatest hits! These are the good old days.

Nature Preserve

Shelter Island’s Mashomack Center is a long way from old Broadway. For our inner city campers an afternoon surrounded by trees, shrubs, birds and sky is a gift of nature education made accessible with a walk along the wheelchair accessible Joan Coles’ Trail.

Spa Day

An afternoon of pretty pampering is arranged for SFAH young ladies for the night of the big prom. Local salons and volunteers unite to create visions of beauty for their grand entrance and chance to be voted “Prom Queen.”

Golf

All of our campers enjoy golf. We create a pitching green with nets and

targets, and for those who show a greater interest, there is a visit to

the local driving range.  Finally a test of their skills is on the world famous Shinnecock Hills Golf Course.

Very Special Activities

We provide unique opportunities for our campers each year.  These special activities are never-to-be-forgotten memories of their camp experiences.

The Sarah Schumacher Callahan Memorial Sailing Program

We have a crew ready to sail with the campers on the bay so blue. They are able to feel the sun on their faces and wind in their hair as they set off on a short trip around the Bay.

DJ School

A DJ group from New York City arrives at camp with their equipment and

teaches the campers the art of scratch and mix – fully mastered DJ’s sounds for every social occasion. A big favorite with the older boys.

Rock Concert

Finger snapping, head bobbing and foot stomping with a concert from Project Vibe, a local rock reggae band. It’s a musical evening of high notes, great atmosphere, and memories.

Peconic Bay Cruise

Captain Cliff is at the helm as SFAH takes a trip around Shelter Island in Peconic Bay on their own private ferry at sunset with sailboats in the background. This is a special evening with many special memories.

Reunion Party

Just when you thought that summer was gone forever, a breath of soft breeze blows in to New York City in February for the camp reunion party. An afternoon filled with music, conversation and food, we love to catch up with each other and plan for the camp season ahead.

Mets Major League Baseball

Take me out to the ball game! We are lucky enough to take a small group to Shea each summer.  They indulge in the full experience, hats, foam fingers, hot dogs and fly balls; a real special treat for all.

Horse Back Riding

Horseback riding gives remarkable benefits to our riders by stretching both mind and muscles. Improvements in posture, balance, coordination, muscle tone, confidence and self-worth are amazing.  Visiting the local horse farm is a real favorite with our younger campers who really adore getting up close and personal with their new equine friends.

Theater

A group of campers goes to Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor to see a play followed by ice cream on the waterfront. This is a relaxing, entertaining evening that our older campers adore.
