The Southampton Fresh Air Home strives to provide a true camping experience for every one of its campers.
Days begin with flag raising before breakfast. Throughout the day there are sports activities, computer classes, arts and crafts, and
swimming. Campers enjoy outings, cookouts, camp-outs
or activities at night. Activities are varied and
adapted for the ability and dexterity levels of
the campers.
Sports
Campers engage in
interactive sports with equipment adapted to their
needs. There is basketball, tennis, baseball, golf,
track, sailing and swimming. Older campers have
the option to participate in an off-campus track
team. Sailing is done in Southampton at a new accessible
dock. The sail boat, "Sara
C", is provided by Sea Legs, a non-profit organization
of disabled veterans that makes sailing possible
for people with a wide range of disabilities.
Arts and Crafts
Various projects
occupy the campers on rainy days. They enhance
their creativity through arts and crafts activities.
Campers make masks, costumes, and props for their
nighttime theatrical performances and dances. The
camp has a flat deck that both campers and counselors
use as a stage.
Computers
The camp is equipped
with IBM-compatible computers, as well as a color
printer, scanner, and digital camera. Adaptive
software and technology is also available. Settings exist
on computer software to adapt to dexterity levels.
By working with this equipment at the camp, the
campers enhance their confidence levels and achieve greater computer literacy in a fun and challenging educational environment.
Campers use
creative software for arts and crafts projects,
such as Hanes T-Shirt Maker® to create a t-shirt
featuring the design of their choosing.
Campers
have access to e-mail through our very own branded
e-mail service in conjunction with Everyone.net
to be used at camp and beyond, in conjunction with
access to the world wide web. Campers participate
in a three-tiered computer program where they are
taught the basics of e-mail account set up and use,
word processing, and web design through HTML coding.
In addition to the hour long sessions every other
day they are at camp, those campers wishing to
further perfect their skills are given additional
instruction. To view some of the webpages created
by the campers this summer click here.
Outings
The camp is in Southampton,
a small East End town on Long Island. It is a close-knit community.
The community reaches out to support the camp and
enhance its programs in the summer season.
Campers attend
concerts at local Agawam Park. They go to the circus when it comes to town, to carnivals, the 4th of July parade and fireworks, the beach, and to movies. They go to a local nature preserve, to minor league ball games, and to the theater.
Members of the Home's Board of Directors take a personal interest in the camp each summer, and often entertain groups of campers in their homes. Southampton is a warm and social community, and our campers are a part of the town's history and its current life.
